Luxury Sheets--The Importance Of Thread Count And Fabric Choice

Luxury sheets used to be hard to come by and equally hard to afford.  Now sheets with higher thread counts are not only more available, they are also more affordable.

Higher Thread Count--What it Means

The higher the thread count in a set of sheets, the more they will cost, but what does it really mean?  Thread count is the number of threads in a square inch of the fabrics.  The more threads there are, the softer the fabric will feel.  For sheets anything above 180 threads is considered good quality, but luxury sheets come in thread counts up to 1200.

Depending on the fabric used, the higher thread count can cause the fabric to become thinner and not as durable.  Thread counts above 300 are considered in the realm of luxury sheets, but thread count is not the only consideration when choosing new sheets, you must also consider the fabric the sheets are made from.

Egyptian Cotton

There are many different types of cotton, but Egyptian cotton is considered one of the best and is used in many luxury sheets.  Egyptian cotton is grown in Egypt, and the growing conditions there produce a cotton that has longer fibers than that grown in other parts of the world.  These longer fibers result in a fabric that is smoother and also retains their strength.  Egyptian cotton can be made into sheets with higher thread counts without jeopardizing the strength of the fabric.

Bamboo Sheets?

Bamboo is one of the more recent fabrics being used for luxury sheets.  The fibers from bamboo are particularly soft, and make very fine and soft sheets.  Another benefit of bamboo is that it has antibacterial properties that remain with the fabric even with repeated washes. For any fabric that will spend time next to the skin, this antibacterial property is a significant bonus.

When you have felt the softness available in luxury bedding, you will never go back to low thread counts and cheap materials again.  The difference in how a premium sheet feels against your skin is amazing.  Since we spend so much of our lives in bed, it makes sense to make that setting is as comfortable as possible.

I've not had any trouble washing mine. I've got some nice Egyptian cotton sheets that I keep for the winter and because they have a higher thread count they are much softer and wash and iron quite easily.

I'm looking forward to saving up some money to buy some of these nice luxury sheets. I suppose having a higher thread count makes the sheets a lot heavier so it may be difficult to wash them as easily as you can wash the lower thread count sheets.

I didn't realise the thread count varied so much. Mostly before I've just gone out and bought sheets because I like the feel or like the color. Now that I think of it most of the sheets I bought in the past have been quite low thread count. In the end it's the cost that counts for me but if I see some of these nice luxury sheets in a sale then I'll give them a try.
